Church

I haven't been to church in a while. I have a feeling I say that too much lately. It's a shame. Anyway, the other day I was at a happy hour at a pretty reputable bar (by reputable I mean, nicer than the dumps I usually frequent) and I was standing up leaning against this leather covered chair. It wasn't real leather, kinda like a vinyl, rubbery plether. I guess I was unconsciously picking at it while I was talking to some friends. Five minutes later I realized I was gouging out a pretty decent sized portion of the back of the seat. I knew it was wrong, but I kept doing it because it was fun. It reminded me of being in church; scraping the grime off the wooden pew in front of me. I don't know why that's fun but... and why is church the only place where you can really scrape like that?

CCD

It occurred to me this past weekend that I had no clue what CCD stands for. Yeah it stands for being a good Catholic, and it was a chore that we all did every Sunday morning which wrecked our childhood weekends. So, I tried guessing what it stood for. Uhhhh,Catholic...Catechism...Department.. no that's not it. Uh Catholic, Communion, Doctrine. Errr, Christian, Church....fuuuhhh, how did I ever get confirmed? Pretty pathetic that I don't even know the name of something I had done every Sunday for nine years of my life. Even more pathetic that I had to do a Google search to figure out what it was... wiki answers tells me that it stands for The Cofraternity of Christian Doctrine. That was my next guess.

Ash Wednesday

The good Catholic that I am, I went to Ash Wednesday today during my lunch. It's funny how you kind of get a little stressed about going to Ash Wednesday. I don't like to wear my religion on my sleeve much less my forehead. But when you sit in the pew you are definitely wondering which priest will give you the best ash. You wonder if you want the one who is going to glob it on and make it really black or you go to the guy who is giving out the light dusting. You make sure your forehead is cleared of any head grease, you move your hair over, you take off your glasses, you try really hard not to scratch your forehead or mess it up putting on your coat. The first thing you do when you leave the chruch though is ask your friend if you got a "good ash" or you look in the reflection in the storefront glass just to make sure it's a good one. And you get a little disappointed if it doesn't resemble a cross at all and is just a big smudge. hmpf..
